The naming process
The naming process consists of four phases: The brand strategy forms the basis for developing ideas.
1. Strategy audit (Week 1)
The naming briefing is based on your Brand Frame® – our brand strategy model – or on your existing brand strategy using our briefing template. We analyze your main competitor and explore initial directions.
Deliverables: Kick-off meeting
2. Generate, screen and present names (Week 1-2)
Based on the briefing, we develop a wide range of name ideas, discuss them and refine them into a shortlist. We then screen the shortlist for unwanted meanings in relevant languages, protectability in the appropriate Nice classes, existing brand and website usage, and available URLs. Based on the screening, we present 4 name proposals for your brand.
Deliverable: Presentation of 4 name proposals incl. rationale, desktop research, linguistic screening, trademark register screening, research into available URLs
3. Legal review (Week 3)
We recommend having your favorites legally reviewed by your legal department or an external lawyer. They evaluate the risk regarding trademark registration and thereby make the decision more objective.
4. Name selection (Week 4)
With the assessment from the legal review and based on the strategic fit, the final name is selected and can then be registered.
Total duration: 4–6 weeks | Investment: From €10,000

Frequently asked questions about naming
-
What is naming in branding?
Naming is the strategic development of a name for a company, brand, product, service or offering. A good name does more than simply label something; it conveys an initial sense of the brand.
In branding, naming is a central part of brand identity. The name is often the first point of contact with a brand and shapes how it is perceived, remembered and talked about. That is why a brand name should not be created by chance or selected purely based on personal taste.
A professional naming process combines brand strategy, language, competitive analysis and preliminary legal screening. The goal is a name that fits the positioning, stands out in the market, remains viable in the long term and provides the foundation for design, communication and brand building.
-
Why is a good brand name important?
A good brand name creates a first impression before people know your offering in detail. It influences whether your brand is perceived as professional, relevant, distinctive and memorable.
Especially in markets with many similar offerings, the name is an important differentiator. A generic name may describe what you do, but it does not yet build a distinctive brand. A strategic name, on the other hand, can spark curiosity, create recognition and convey a sense of your brand promise.
There is also a practical impact: A concise name is easier to pronounce, search for, design and recommend. It works on your website, in sales, in presentations, on packaging, on social media and in direct conversation.
-
When does a company need professional naming?
Professional naming is especially relevant for new businesses, rebrandings, mergers, portfolio expansions or internationalization.
A naming process is particularly useful when the existing name no longer fits the brand. This can happen when the offering, target audience or positioning has changed. Mergers also often raise the question of whether an existing name still works or whether a new shared name is needed.
Professional naming is also important when a name will be visible for the long term and needs legal protection. A temporary name can lead to high costs later if it cannot be protected, is already in use or no longer fits strategically.
The most important rule: Naming should be clarified before design, website, campaign and launch.
-
How does the naming process at Helder work?
The naming process at Helder begins with a strategic briefing or workshop. In this step, we clarify what your brand stands for, who it should appeal to, which competitive environment is relevant and which requirements the name needs to meet.
Based on this, we develop a large number of name ideas internally and refine them into a curated shortlist. The favorites are evaluated not only by how they sound, but also by strategic fit, differentiation, conciseness, linguistic viability and scalability.
We then screen the names for critical meanings in relevant languages, existing usage, digital availability and initial trademark risks. The final favorites are legally reviewed by a specialized partner law firm.
-
Does a brand name need to describe what we do?
A brand name does not need to fully explain what a company does. But it should convey an appropriate direction, association or attitude.
Highly descriptive names may seem easy to understand at first, but they are often harder to protect and less differentiating. If many competitors use similar terms, it becomes difficult to build a distinctive brand.
More abstract, associative or newly coined names may require more explanation at first. In the long term, however, they can become more powerful because they build their own meaning. What matters is that the name is not arbitrary, but developed strategically from the brand.
-
How does Helder ensure that a brand name is legally viable?
Helder reviews name ideas early on for obvious risks, existing usage and initial indications of protectability. This includes desktop research and screening in the trademark register within the relevant Nice classes.
This preliminary review does not replace binding legal advice. However, it helps to identify and eliminate weak or risky ideas at an early stage. For the final legal review, Helder works with a specialized partner law firm. The law firm reviews the preferred names from a trademark law perspective and provides an assessment.
-
How much does professional naming cost?
The investment for professional naming depends on a few factors: Is it a single name or a brand architecture with several sub-brands? In how many Nice classes should the name be protected? Will the trademark be registered in Germany, Europe or worldwide?
The scope also depends on whether a brand strategy is already in place or whether a brand workshop is needed first. Naming projects at Helder start at €10,000.
A name is visible at every touchpoint for years. The investment not only helps prevent costly mistakes, but also creates a foundation for design, communication and brand building.
-
How do you measure whether a brand name works?
A brand name works when it fits the strategy, stands out in the market and is understood, remembered and accepted by the target audience.
During the naming process, specific criteria can be evaluated. These include strategic fit, differentiation within the competitive landscape, pronunciation, memorability, linguistic associations, digital availability and legal viability. After launch, additional signals can be considered: search behavior, recognition, feedback from sales conversations, internal acceptance and consistency in application.
Not every good name is love at first sight. What matters is making the name your own and building meaning around it. Successful brand names are consistently supported by design, communication and use. The key is that they have enough distinctiveness to grow with the brand over the long term.
A name should therefore be considered a strategic asset for the years ahead and be built to last.
-
Can we combine naming with brand strategy and brand design?
Yes. Brand strategy defines what your brand stands for. Naming translates this foundation into language. Brand design then makes the name visible and tangible.
At Helder, naming can be developed as a standalone service or as part of a broader branding process. Especially for new businesses, rebrandings, mergers or product launches, combining these services makes sense because the name, messaging and design are considered together from the very beginning.
